Empty canoe causes search on Combahee River

An overturned canoe found Sunday on the Combahee River near the edge of Beaufort County touched off a search for the missing occupants, according to an S.C. Department of Natural Resources officer.

But it turns out the occupants had made it safely home on their own.

Boaters found the overturned canoe and contacted DNR at about 12:45 p.m., 1st Sgt. Robbie Smith said. The canoe still had gear inside, causing DNR and other agencies to start a search.

They later learned the two men in the canoe had swam ashore after it overturned, went home and changed clothes, Smith said. The two men were found when they returned to the river to retrieve the canoe.
