Greg Wojcik, Joe Bryant among HHIAGA winners at Oyster Reef

Greg Wojcik maintains the Oyster Reef Golf Club course is not the kind of course he normally plays well. The 6,440-yard, par-72 layout requires you to carry the ball high to miss the bunkers, something he doesn't do.

Only on the final two holes can you run the ball up onto the green, he said.

But fortunately for Wojcik, this weekend went against the norm.

Wojcik shot a final-round 73 on Sunday to finish with a two-day total of 150 to win the Hilton Head Island Amateur Golf Association's Senior Championship by six strokes over Chris Morris.

"The key to my game was my driver," Wojcik said. "I was in play on all the holes, I avoided the bunkers and I had some good up-and-downs."

Wojcik, who will miss most of the rest of the HHIAGA's schedule when he returns to Newburgh, N.Y., for three months during the summer, didn't have to play out of a single bunker for Sunday's round and showed some deft touch around the greens.

"I chipped very well enough to get close enough to the hole to make the putts I had to make," Wojcik said.

Wojcik praised the course conditions at Oyster Reef, particularly the greens. And now his name will be added to the championship plaque just below that of his friend, last year's champion, J.R. Evans.

"It was a thrill for me winning this one'" Wojcik said.

Jim Manning was the Senior Championship Net Division champion, edging Evans 145-146.

In the Championship Flight, Joe Bryant shot the tournament's only round under par to move from fourth to first Sunday and claim the championship.

Bryant's 1-under 71 was enough to best J.D. Hoft's second-day 74 and give him the two-stroke victory, 148-150. Ironically, Hoft bested Bryant by two strokes last year, 147-149.

"I putted well down the stretch," Bryant said. "I had a big birdie putt on No. 18, a 55-footer. Everything was just working in my favor. I figured if I just posted a decent number, I had a good chance."

Bryant was right. And if there was any doubt things were going his way, Bryant aced the 211-yard par-3 16th hole.

"I hit a utility 5 club," Bryant said. "And it was one bounce and in."
