Prep Roundup, March 22: Beaufort High track teams strong at Wando Relays

TRACK & FIELD

Mellow Mushroom Relays at Wando: Beaufort High's girls had a strong day at Wando's Mellow Mushroom Relays, winning the 4x400 relay and finishing second in both the 4x100 and 4x200. The Eagles also finished fourth in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Beaufort High's Amanda Barnes had a mark of 12 feet to finish with the top spot in the pole vault, and Kaitlin Hamilton's distance of 108-03 in the discus was the best of the day.

Battery Creek's girls were second in the shuttle hurdle relay and third in both the sprint medley relay and 4x100 relay. The Dolphins' Zakiya Cobban had the second best triple jump of the day with a distance of 34 feet, 9 1/4 inches.

Hilton Head High's girls finished second in the 4x1600.

Bluffton's girls took fourth in the 4x200.

Beaufort High's boys had three top-three finishes, including a new meet record in the 4x100 relay. The team of Malcolm Simmons, Michael Dickson, Nate Parker and DeQuan Cason had a winning time of 3:25.17.

Beaufort's boys also finished second in the 4x200 and third in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Bluffton's Neil Blanken was the boys discus winner with a throw of 157-7.

Hilton Head High's boys won the 4x1600 relay and were third in the 4x800.

Battery Creek's Cleveland Hampton finished fifth in the triple jump (41-1).

GIRLS SOCCER

Beaufort High 2, Hilton Head Christian 0: Taylor Rabon scored in the first half, and Tori Owens added a second-half goal to lift the Beaufort girls.

"It was kind of one of those moral victories," HHCA coach Ben Gerdts said.

"Beaufort High is a great team, really well coached," he added. "We were happy to be competitive with them."

Gerdts credited stopper Monica Bundy with a strong game. Goalkeeper Meaghan Gillis made nine saves for HHCA (3-1), which plays again at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Beaufort Academy.

BOYS GOLF

Hilton Head Island High 305, Hilton Head Prep 362: Patrick Hall shot a 34 on the back nine at Bear Creek to lead the Seahawks to a win over Hilton Head Prep. Hall finished with a 72, winning medalist honors.

SOFTBALL

Beaufort High 13-10, Darlington 10-5: The Eagles were on the winning side of two slugfests, 13-10 and 10-5.

Rachel Schwindt hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to put away the opener. Michelle Brown had three hits, while Chelsea Welty, Megan Cieplowski and Schwindt each had two hits. Mari Cook won in relief of Jenny Mullins.

Schwindt hit her second three-run homer of the day in the second game. Savannah Mullen, Welty and Cieplowski each had two hits, and Natalie Moore doubled.

Freshman Mary Claire Sumner picked up her first win, pitching three perfect innings in relief of starter Jenny Mullins.

BASEBALL

Middle school: John Paul II 20, Cathedral Academy 0; John Paul II 20, Cathedral Academy 0

BASKETBALL

North-South All-Star Game: Bluffton's D.J. Dobson scored 14 points, but his South squad came up on the short end of Saturday's South Carolina all-star game, falling to the North team, 96-84. Ridgeland-Hardeeville's Terrance Frazier also played for the South team, scoring four points.
