A Bluffton man was charged with driving under the influence after he and four others were injured in a wreck Friday on U.S. 278 at Buckwalter Parkway, according to the Bluffton Police Department.

Felipe Santos-Hernandez, 52, ran a red light on U.S. 278 at about 8 a.m. and struck a car, causing that vehicle to hit another car in the eastbound turn lane, Capt. Joseph Manning said.

Two people were trapped in their vehicles, and Santos-Hernandez and four others were taken to Coastal Carolina Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Manning said.

Santos-Hernandez was charged with driving under the influence and driving without a driver's license after he was released from the hospital. He was being held Friday at the Beaufort County Detention Center, with bail set at $1,234.50.

The wreck closed all westbound lanes of U.S. 278 for about 45 minutes, Bluffton Township Fire District spokesman Randy Hunter said. At about 9 a.m., one lane was reopened.

The identities of the others injured were not released Friday.
