Battery Creek High School girls basketball coach Bernadette Ulmer has been fired after four seasons.

Dolphins athletics director John Drafts said in an email Thursday the school's administration decided a change was needed and thanked Ulmer for her service as head coach and previous seasons as an assistant.

Ulmer declined comment.

The Battery Creek girls reached the third round of the Class 2-A playoffs in February before losing to eventual state champion Bishop England. The Dolphins finished 11-3 in Region 6-AA to earn a No. 2 seed and a home playoff game.

The playoff run was the Dolphins' longest in Ulmer's four seasons as head coach.

Battery Creek lost to Bishop England in the second round of the 2013 playoffs, lost at Myrtle Beach in the first round in 2012 and in the first round to Crestwood in 2011.

An attempt to reach Drafts for further comment on the potential vacancy wasn't immediately successful. The job had not been posted to the Beaufort County School District website as of Thursday morning.

An answer might already be on staff.

Former Battery Creek standout Sarah Hayes assisted Ulmer this season. Hayes, a history teacher who was Battery Creek's valedictorian in 2002, played at Brown University and professionally in Europe before assisting with the women's program at Carnegie Melon and then returning to Beaufort.

Hayes was part of the first class of the Battery Creek athletics hall of fame inducted in 2013.
