The mother of former U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, Hilton Head Island resident Betty Rawlings Batson, passed away on March 10.

Batson was 84. From her obituary:

She graduated from Greenville high School and attended Randolph Macon Women's College. Betty was a talented entrepreneur and a pioneer for business women in the South. She established and directed one of the most successful dancing schools in South Carolina during the 1960's. Many of Greenville's most prominent residents were students of The DeMint Academy of Dance and Decorum. After relocating to Hilton Head, Betty became one of the most successful real estate brokers on the island.
