Charles Street is closed to traffic today from Boundary to Bay streets, as patching and paving continues in downtown Beaufort.

Rain continues to delay progress downtown, with no road work being done on Monday, according to an update from the city.

Work resumed Tuesday, as showers would allow, with additional crews being assigned to make up for lost time.

Streetlight replacement is also proceeding downtown, with the foundations for new streetlights on Bay and Carteret streets expected to be poured this week.

Pedestrians and motorists are advised to use caution as power to streetlights on the south side of Bay Street has been cut to accommodate the work.

Bay Street updates:

  • Seven new parking meter poles.
  • New brick pavers installed.
  • Demolition around existing and proposed tree planters where new decorative bricks will be installed.
  • Irrigation.
  • Sections of sidewalk along the south side of Bay Street to be removed this week.
