Recreation Briefs, March 19: Bluffton's 11-12 all-stars win state basketball title

BLUFFTON BOYS WIN STATE BASKETBALL TITLE

A group of 11- and 12-year-old all-stars from Bluffton won the South Carolina state championship this weekend at Beaufort County Parks and Leisure Services' Buckwalter Gymnasium in Bluffton.

The Bluffton all-stars defeated opponents from North Charleston, North Myrtle Beach and Richland County to win the title, taking the final game in overtime. It is the first time a PALS team has won a state basketball championship.

Members of the winning team were: Lee Kirkland, Stephen Vanderpool, Josh Patterson, Jack Hegan, C.L. Chewning, Camwren Pinckney, Andrew Babkiewicz, Stone McDonald, Aaron Hill, Joseph Kelley and Michael Chappelear. The team was coached by Jack Fripp and assistant B.J. Hill.

BUCKWALTER GYM CLOSED UNTIL MARCH 24

The Buckwalter Gymnasium in Bluffton will be closed from March 19 through the morning of March 24 while it is being used for the Lowcountry Home and Garden Show.

SUN CITY MEN WIN VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT

A men's volleyball team from Sun City claimed the championship at the Good Life Games in Clearwater, Fla., on March 6. The field consisted of five teams of 60-and-over players.

Sun City's squad won every match they played against the four Florida teams, taking the final game 28-26.

Members of Sun City's gold medal team were Dennis Stosak, Bob Lewis, Harry Kauffman, Charles Kozup, Steve Weber and player/coach "Kid" Jose Bermudez.

Two other Sun City players were recruited to play on other teams in the event. Diana Cooper-Fawcett played for the Villages in the women's division, while Bill Fawcett played for one of the Clearwater club teams in the 60-and-over event. Both won bronze medals.

LOW COUNTRY VOLLEYBALL CLUB TEAM WINS GOLD

The Low Country Volleyball Club 14 National team brought home the Gold Championship earlier this month at the Southern Classic Power Tournament in Greenville.

Members of the winning team are: Grace Vanderslice, Olivia Janson, Lizzie Rhoads, Essence Mitchell, Kaylie Richardson, Madeline Novak, Sidney Beasley, Megan Briody and Bethany Mullins. The team is coached by Kristine Richardson and Priscilla Kelly.

CLUB KARATE MEMBERS COMPETE IN SHARKFEST

Four members of Beaufort's Club Karate competed in the Sharkfest tournament recently held in Myrtle Beach.

Kylie Rast took first place in weapons, first place in kata and second in fighting. Hunter Rast was first in weapons, first in fighting and second in kata. Ryan Giles placed first in fighting and second in kata. Collin Owens took second in kata and third in fighting.

Their instructor is Chuck Elias.

LEVEL 3 SPARKLERS WIN NATIONAL GYMNASTICS CHALLENGE

The Sports Academy Sparklers participated in the seventh annual National Gymnastics Challenge on March 7-9 on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens. More than 3,000 gymnasts competed.

The Level 3 Sparklers won first place in their Friday session, with a record team score of 109.725. Mallie O'Rourke, 7, led the way for the Sparklers, winning silver in the all-around and uneven parallel bars, and a bronze on the balance beam. Alyssa Jo Jesweski, 12, had a score of 9.425 on the beam to take home gold.

Level 9 Sparkler Hannah Shannon, 17, won bronze on vault.

Lauren Angus, 13, won a Level 5 silver medal on the floor exercise and bronze on beam.

Madayln West, 9, won silver on vault and bronze medals in the bars and all-around at Level 4.
