Hilton Head man killed in one-car wreck near Shelter Cove Plaza

A Hilton Head Island man was killed in a one-car wreck early this morning on U.S. 278 near Shelter Cove Plaza, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The man, identified by Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen as 43-year-old Jerome Eric Stewart, was driving west when the 1996 Lincoln he was driving went off the left side of the road into the median, striking a tree, Cpl. Sonny Collins said.

The vehicle's passenger, a woman, was air lifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, Collins said. Her condition is unknown.

The man and the woman were not wearing seat belts at the time of the wreck, Collins said.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office also responded to the wreck, which took place about 2:19 a.m.

U.S. 278 westbound was closed to traffic following the wreck, and was reopened at 5 a.m.

The wreck is under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol.
