South Carolina's unemployment rate has dropped for the eighth consecutive month, but Beaufort County's rate increased in January.

The state Department of Employment and Workforce said Monday that unemployment was 6.4 percent for the month.

Beaufort County's rate went from 5.6 percent in December to 6 percent in January.

State officials said December was the first time in more than a decade that South Carolina's unemployment had been below the national rate.
