The March 9 shooting of a former Beaufort High School basketball and football player was an accident, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman.

Witnesses have told investigators that Thomas Parker, 19, was shot in the face when a 16-year-old boy accidentally discharged a gun he was handling, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said.

Parker was shot about 6:30 p.m. near Jenkins Point Road on St. Helena Island.

Parker, a former wide receiver on the school's football team and forward on its basketball team, has been released from the hospital, McIntosh said.

McIntosh said the investigation continues, but no charges have been filed.
