Prep Roundup, March 15: Beaufort's Barnes sets top pole vault mark in nation

Bob Hayes Invitational: Beaufort High sophomore Amanda Barnes had one of the highlights of the day in Jacksonville, Fla., setting a meet record with a winning height of 12 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault. The mark, which broke a seven-year-old meet record, gives Barnes the top performance in the nation among 10th-graders.

Beaufort High's girls also were strong in the 4x100 relay, finishing with a time of 49.8 seconds. Tatyana Fripp, Bre-Anne Heyward-White, Savionna Glover and Aaliyah Smalls comprised the Eagles' team.

Battery Creek's Quamecha Morrison took seventh in the high jump (5-2), Kimberly Vigil was eighth in the pole vault (7-6), and La'Shirrae Morrall finished 12th in the triple jump (34-11).

On the boys' side, Beaufort High's Michael Dickson placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.6, which is one of the best times for a South Carolina athlete this year.

Beaufort High's 4x400 team also had a strong time, clocking in at 3:27.

Antoine Smalls was the winner of the $1,000 Bob Hayes Invitational James Day College Scholarship, which rewards a student for their community service and athletic endeavors.


Hilton Head Island High 4, Bishop England 2: The Seahawks dropped the top two singles matches, but won the rest of them in their matchup with Bishop England in a round-robin tournament hosted by Hilton Head High.

Hilton Head Island High 6, Beaufort High 0: Hilton Head High finished 3-0 to win its round-robin tournament.

The Seahawks (3-0) are off until March 25, when they play at Bishop England.

Battery Creek 1-5, Tamaqua (Pa.) 12-4: The Dolphins split a doubleheader with their guests from Pennsylvania, dropping the opener 12-1 before rallying for a 5-4 win in the bottom of the seventh of the nightcap.

Zach Mahan went the distance in the second game, getting the win after giving up two earned runs on seven hits.

Battery Creek scored three runs in their last at-bat to get the win. Clyde Parker's single drive in the winning run.

Mahan went 2 for 3 with two doubles, Henry Schubert was 3 for 4 and Craig Capano went 2 for 3 with a double for the Dolphins (2-4).

Parker was 1 for 1 with a run scored, and Capano was 1 for 2 with RBI in the first game.
