County plans airport emergency exercise

Hilton Head Island Town Council will decide Tuesday whether to grant a new plan to rezone a failed, 8.56-acre housing development off Beach City Road near the Hilton Head Island Airport runway.

Emergency agencies in Beaufort County and the town of Hilton Head Island will participate in an airport emergency exercise at the Hilton Head Island Airport on Tuesday morning.

The Hilton Head Island Airport Fire Department, Hilton Head Island Fire and Rescue, Hilton Head Hospital, Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, Beaufort County Coroner's Office and the Marine Corps Air Station will participate in the large-scale exercise. The exercise will take two to three hours.

Airports are requried to perform such exercises every three years to receive certification from the Federal Avaiation Administration.
