Prep Roundup, March 11: Bluffton boys soccer team moves to 4-0 on season

BOYS SOCCER

Bluffton 4, Savannah Arts Academy 1: Four different players scored as the Bluffton High School boys soccer team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 4-1 victory Tuesday against Savannah Arts Academy.

Akeel Crooks, Misael Moreno, Pablo Rios and D.J. Chappelear found the back of the net for the Bobcats, while Omar Govea controlled the midfield. Steven DiMaria made 12 saves in goal.

The Bobcats play at Wade Hampton on Friday.

Academic Magnet 2, Beaufort High 0: The Eagles opened the regular season with a loss on the road. Brooks Wilson finished with eight saves for Beaufort High.

The Eagles begin their Region 8-AAAA schedule at Fort Dorchester at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Summerville 2, Hilton Head Island High 0: Summerville notched a pair of first-half goals, and the Seahawks weren't able to respond.

"We just dug ourselves a hole and we were just not into the game at the very beginning," Seahawks coach Wayne Quinlan said.

Hilton Head High (2-2) plays at 6 p.m. Friday at Beaufort Academy.

Beaufort Academy 4, Cathedral Academy 0: Jack Olsson, Drummond Koppernaes and Jacob Dalton scored goals for the Eagles.

George Sanford and Joe Bhoi each had an assist, and Ashton Guest recorded his second straight shutout in goal for Beaufort Academy (3-2).

Beaufort Academy hosts Hilton Head High at 6 p.m. Friday.

Hilton Head Prep 7, St. Andrews 0: Teron Daley scored twice as Hilton Head Prep evened its record at 2-2.

Will Peterkin, Waddy Brooks, Sean O'Conner, Garrett Spencer and Zach June had the other goals for Hilton Head Prep. Goalkeeper Adam Schauss made two saves.

The Dolphins (1-1-1) host First Baptist at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Hilton Head Prep 5, St. Andrews 3: Catherine Sheehan and Charlotte Covington each had two goals to lead the Dolphins to their first victory of the season.

Carley Willey also scored for Hilton Head Prep, and Kate Herman earned the start in goal.

The Dolphins (1-1-1) host First Baptist on Thursday.

BASEBALL

Whale Branch 24, Bethune-Bowman 4 (4 innings): Seventh-grader Sam Stewart picked up the victory, pitching 2 1-3 innings in the four-inning affair, as the Warriors won their Region 5-A opener. Stewart gave up no earned runs and had six strikeouts.

Marshall Daise went 4 for 4 with three RBIs, and Braylon Harrison was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and three stolen bases to lead Whale Branch (2-0 overall, 1-0 region).

The Warriors are back in action at 6 p.m. Thursday, hosting Branchville.

SOFTBALL

Whale Branch 22, Bethune-Bowman 9 (5 innings): Ciara Courtney went 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, and also struck out five batters in two innings to lead the Warriors to victory.

Tanasia Campbell was 4 for 5 with three RBIs, hitting a pair of doubles and a triple. Nya Simmons went 3 for 3 -- finishing a home run shy of hitting for the cycle -- and had three RBIs, and Marissa Roberts went 3 for 5 for the Warriors (2-0 overall, 1-0 Region 5-A).

Olivia Walker (2-0) got the pitching win, striking out one in three innings.

Whale Branch plays Branchville at home at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

BOYS TENNIS

Hilton Head Prep 9, Beaufort Academy 0: The Dolphins got their first win of the season in dominating fashion, never losing more than one game in any set.

Hilton Head Prep (1-1) will be off until March 20, when it plays at Pinewood Prep.

BOYS GOLF

Hilton Head Prep 160, Beaufort Academy 209: Walker Campbell led the way in the victory for the Dolphins, carding a 36 at Sea Pines' Ocean Course. Jose Quilis was right behind him with a 37. Uige Ujaan had a 43, John Larson a 44 and Sam Warren a 49 for Hilton Head Prep, which plays Bluffton at Island West on Thursday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Hilton Head Island High 20, West Ashley 10: Abby Ogden scored seven goals to lead the Seahawks, who improved to 6-1.

Haley Matousek scored four goals, and Savannah Reier added three scores. Mary Piper Martel, Paige Medford, Tristyn Schaeffer, Townsend Crout and Katy Sandoval each scored goals.

Jordan Balay had eight saves for Hilton Head High, and Makena Auichouser made four saves for the Seahawks, who host Wando on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before traveling to Academic Magnet on Friday.
