Voters should say no to raising local sales tax

newsroom@islandpacket.comMarch 10, 2014

Let me get this right. We're going to possibly be facing two referendums, each for a 1 percent increase in our sales tax. Currently, the state sales tax is set at 6 percent.

New York has an 8.25 percent sales tax. Do you all make New York salaries here? I don't think so.

As for the statement by elected officials that visitors to the area will contribute to this cause, just remember you'll be paying 100 percent of it all of the time.

Our visitors get to go home to their respective states, some with no sales tax or a smaller amount of sales tax -- and very few with a higher sales tax.

Instead, let the county and towns reduce their respective operating costs. Stop burdening Beaufort County residents with the ever-increasing cost of living here.
