Prep Roundup, March 8: Beaufort High girls win Diamond Hornets track meet

Diamond Hornets Invitational: Led by Bre-Anna Heyward-White, who was named the meet's outstanding track athlete, the Beaufort High School girls team won the annual Diamond Hornets Invitational at Lower Richland High School on Saturday.

Heyward-White won the 400-meter dash, was second in the 200, and helped the Beaufort High girls win both the 4x400 and 4x100 relays.

Tamara Shields and Jackie Barnes also had first-place finishes for Beaufort High's girls, with Shields winning the 100 hurdles and helping out on the 4x400, and Barnes taking first in the pole vault with a height of 11 feet, 2 inches.

Beaufort High's boys also fared well, placing third out of 28 teams.

Michael Dickson had a victory for the Eagles in the 110 hurdles. He was also part of a second-place 4x400 team, along with Malcolm Simmons, Nathan Parker and Atlantis Mitchell. Beaufort High also took second in the 4x800 behind Brandon Pratt, Christopher Bacon, Mitchell and Jeffrey Tookes. Other second-place finishes came from Simmons in the 400, Parker in the 400 hurdles and Pratt in the 1,600 meters. The Eagles got thirds from their 4x100 team of Eric Blakely, Dickson, Parker and Simmons, and from Pratt in the 3,200.

GIRLS LACROSSE

J.L. Mann 18, Hilton Head Island High 8: The Seahawks suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the defending state champions.

Katy Bautista notched four goals to lead Hilton Head High, and Haley Matousek contributed two goals and two assists.

Freshman Jordan Balay made 17 saves in her debut in a Seahawks jersey.

Hilton Head High (4-1) kicks off a stretch of three games in three days with Monday's trip to West Ashley. The Seahawks host West Ashley on Tuesday and Wando on Wednesday.

WRESTLING

North-South all-star matches: Beaufort High's Jake Sharp and Kentrell Seabrook and Bluffton's Mike Meyerink had victories on the second day of the North-South matches at North Myrtle Beach High School, lifting their 4A/1A South squad to a 36-28 victory over the 4A/1A North team in the championship match.

Seabrook won a triple-overtime bout with Westside's Adarius Williams, while Sharp pinned Westwood's Kelvin Williams. Meyerink wrestled twice, defeating Riverside's Michael Weber but losing a one-point decision to Gaffney's Thomas Mabry. Bluffton's Levi Joly also competed, dropping a decision to Fort Mill's Eddie Byrums.

All four of Beaufort County's 4A wrestlers won their opening matches on Friday night.

In Saturday's consolation match, Battery Creek's Brian LaBean won by major decision over Ninety-Six's Brycen Fleming, 13-0, and Whale Branch's Max Ford lost a 6-2 decision to Alfredo Hernandez of Blue Ridge as the 3A/2A North team defeated the 3A/2A South team, 35-28.
