Palmetto Bluff hosting 2nd half marathon on Sunday

After a successful debut last spring, the Palmetto Bluff Half Marathon is back for another year.

The race starts at 9 a.m. Sunday amid the 20,000-acre community's picturesque backdrop. The course is flat and fast.

"(Turnout) has been really good. It's gaining in popularity," said race director Rob Fyfe of the Palmetto Running Company. "The word is getting out about what a great venue it is."

Fyfe said around 650 participants had registered for the race, up from last year.

"We figured between 600 and 700 people. Last year, we had about 500," Fyfe said. "The weather is going to be good, so I expect a little bit of a bump (with late registration)."

Interested runners can still register between noon and 5 p.m.. Saturday at Palmetto Running Company, 22 Plantation Park Drive, Suite No. 103, in Bluffton. The registration fee is $80.

A portion of each registration fee will go to BackPack Buddies, an organization whose mission is to assist children on free or reduced meal plans at school. The organization sends backpacks full of food home each weekend with children likely to go home to a house with little or no food.

All participants receive a free Brooks tech shirt, and Subaru of Hilton Head will sponsor the post-race party featuring barbecue, beer and live music.
