Sheriff's Office launches information system

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office began using Nixle on Friday to distribute public safety information.

The law enforcement notification system allows the agency to send users alerts and advisories regarding everything from severe weather and crime emergencies to road closures and community meetings.

Residents can sign up for free at by providing their name, contact information and preferences for receiving messages. Nixle is available by text, email, voicemail and Facebook.
