Why no option to not raise sales tax?

newsroom@islandpacket.comMarch 6, 2014

Let me see if I have this right: Voters will be given the option of raising the sales taxes. Option 1 raises sales tax 1 percent for municipalities with some abatement of property tax. Option 2 resuscitates an expiring 1 percent sales tax, targeting capital projects. Since our leaders cannot decide between the two, a commission is being formed to help decide.

It is possible to tax oneself out of preferential choice in the competitive resort market; we may be close -- at least some perceptions are to that effect.

Note, there is no consideration of no tax increase. Incredibly, we seem to need more tax revenue though our leadership apparently has not the foggiest idea what it would be used for.

Please remember such leaders come election time, especially if the referendum only allows choice between these two 1 percent deals.
