Prep Roundup, March 4: Bluffton boys edge Hilton Head in PK shootout

BOYS SOCCER

Bluffton 2, Hilton Head Island High 1 (PK): The Bluffton High School boys soccer team rallied to a 2-1 win over Hilton Head Island High on Tuesday night, as the Bobcats got a late goal in regulation before winning on the sixth penalty kick of a shootout.

Luis Lopez put Hilton Head High (0-1) on the board with a goal in the 56th minute, but Bluffton’s Akeel Crooks scored with nine minutes remaining to tie the match, part of the Beaufort Cup tournament.

After the first five kicks in the shootout, both teams had made three. Bluffton then won on the next sudden death kick, advancing to Saturday’s championship game of the tournament. The Bobcats (2-0) will face Beaufort High at 5 p.m. at Hilton Head High.

Marlon Ascension had five saves in the loss for Hilton Head High, which hosts Hilton Head Prep on Thursday.

BOYS LACROSSE

Hilton Head Island High 15, Bluffton 1: Mike Stumm made 16 saves in goal and got plenty of offense to back him as the Seahawks earned their first win of the season.

Tucker Roberts scored four goals, Will Urbin had three, and Duncan Marx, Thomas Farrell, Daniel Goeffery and Bentley Moore scored two apiece for Hilton Head High (1-1).

The Seahawks host Riverside at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

BASEBALL

Hilton Head Prep 4, Thomas Heyward Academy 1: Brooks Robinson and John Sheehan both went 2 for 4, and James Leonard and Cem Caglyan each had two RBIs to send the Dolphins to a win over the Rebels.

Greg Ward earned the victory, going four innings. Tyler Fox picked up the save, working the final three innings. They combined to hold Thomas Heyward to just three hits.

Hilton Head Prep (3-0) plays at Laurence Manning on Thursday.
