Flyover to cause headache for some

newsroom@islandpacket.comMarch 4, 2014

Both Hilton Head Island Town Council and Beaufort County Council have approved a proposal to address traffic problems that will occur as a result of the new flyover being built on U.S. 278.

Unfortunately, as part of the proposed solution, an addition to Blue Heron Point Road is to be built allowing an exit on to U.S. 278 to go westbound over the bridge. This exit has a number of drawbacks: there is no planned acceleration lane; the exit is less than 400 feet from a turn, creating sight problems; the traffic at this point is usually going 55 mph or faster, and the exit is on an upgrade.

Residents of Blue Heron Point, Mariners Cove and Windmill Harbour will all be expected to use this exit. An alternative would be for all residents to go east to any available turn and make a U-turn to go back west, over the bridge. I believe, this is far from a viable solution, since it creates more safety hazards than it solves.

Residents of the three areas most affected should be concerned. It is not too late to get in touch with the S.C. Department of Transportation or your representative on County Council.
