Instead of a political rant I bring you some history

newsroom@islandpacket.comMarch 4, 2014

Lots of folks who have wandered northward on I-95 have observed a sign denoting a river as the Coosawhatchie. Not long after I moved to the Lowcountry, I met Judy Rigg, owner of Palm Key, a resort in Ridgeland.

When I pronounced the river's name as coo-sah-watchie, she corrected me, stating that the term is a combination of the names of two Native American tribes who inhabited the area in bygone days. They were the Coosaw and the Hatchie. Thus, the correct pronunciation is KOO-suh-HATCH-ee.

I just thought some readers would appreciate my efforts to introduce an issue (however trivial) to the letters section other than the endless political rants.
