Better broadband coming to our area

The Telecommunications Task Force worked closely with AT&T Mobility when it activated six sites on Hilton Head Island and Jenkins Island in 2013. The task force continues to work with Verizon, Crown Castle and Hilton Head Plantation on the proposed new tower there. Additionally, AT&T Mobility has committed to be on that tower and to upgrade the existing system there to LTE, a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data.

In late 2013, the task force began working on a study with Connect South Carolina to examine broadband access to the Internet in locations around the country. The study should be completed in early summer and contain an action plan to improve broadband access as well as adoption and utilization plans for both Hilton Head Island and Beaufort County.

The task force has also aligned its efforts with the town's Economic Development Corporation to ensure that the telecommunications infrastructure on the island meets the needs of new and existing businesses.
