The night started well for Beaufort Academy. But it didn't last long.

The Eagles lost to Richard Winn, 63-22, in the SCISAA Class 2-A girls basketball semifinals Thursday night at the Sumter Civic Center.

"We lost to a much better team," Beaufort Academy coach Brock Vaigneur said. "Tonight, anyway, they were much better than we were."

In her final game for the Eagles, all-time leading scorer Miranda Weslake -- who averages more than 24 points per game -- scored just 12, the lowest output of the year. Her previous low this season had been 17.

"We started great," Vaigneur said. "(Weslake) hit a 3 early, and we jumped out to a 9-2 lead. But they were just so much taller and more athletic than we were."

But Richard Winn (26-1), the defending 2-A state champion, came roaring back and held a commanding 33-13 halftime lead over the Eagles (18-7).

"We knew we had to play above our heads tonight and we just didn't," Vaigneur said. "But that's all right. We're going to work on getting to their level."
