Lane closures expected for flyover project

newsroom@islandpacket.comFebruary 25, 2014

Traffic roars along U.S. 278 on the eastbound approach to the Hilton Head bridges on Tuesday, in the Bluffton Parkway flyover construction zone, where workers have placed barrels and closed off the eastbound shoulder with concrete barriers. Though no work was being conducted on Tuesday night, the R.R. Dawson Bridge Company, which is constructing the flyover, has announced that motorists can expect lane closures in both the east- and west-bound lanes between 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through March 28 between Buckingham Plantation Drive and the bridges to the island, Motorists should expect delays. The closures will allow workers to place asphalt and pavement markings for the widening and install temporary concrete barriers for lane shifts. Drivers should expect to see traffic control signs, flaggers, reductions in the speed limit and message board information. All road work is dependent on the weather.

Construction of the Bluffton Parkway flyover, which will link the road to U.S. 278, will require nightly lane closures starting today and continuing through March.

Contractor R.R. Dawson Bridge Co. is scheduled to widen U.S. 278 at the western end of the bridges to Hilton Head Island beginning Jan. 6 to allow for lane shifts while the company builds the flyover and ramps connecting to the highway.

The shoulder along eastbound U.S. 278 in that area will also be closed until Friday for the contractor to finish installing the silt fence along the highway.

Those lane shifts will begin when the concrete barriers are in place and will last until the project is completed, which is expected to be in October 2015.

Drivers should pay attention to construction signs and be aware of the roadside equipment and crews. Delays are expected.
