USC Aiken wins Wexford Intecollegiate by a stroke

It was USC Aiken's consistency in the face of drastic changes in weather conditions on Monday that allowed the Pacers to bolt to a six-stroke lead over Charleston Southern after the first round of the ninth annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate golf tournament at Wexford Golf Club.

That same consistency on Tuesday carried USC Aiken to a one-shot victory over late-charging Presbyterian on a gorgeous afternoon on Hilton Head Island.

The Pacers, led by third-place finisher Kyle Godsman, followed up Monday's rounds of 297 and 296 with a 295. That was just enough to hold off the Blue Hose, who shot a tournament-best even-par 288.

"Anytime you can win, that's great," USC Aiken coach Michael Carlisle said. "Especially on this golf course. This is a great golf course. There's a lot of good teams here, too. It gives us a lot of confidence. And you can always use more confidence in this game."

The victory was the second of the season for USC Aiken. The Pacers also won the Firestone Invitational in October at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.

Godsman shot a 1-under 71 to finish third individually, and all five USCA golfers finished 22nd or better in the 90-player field.

"We were pretty consistent. It was a real team event," Carlisle said. "Everybody contributed something. If a team goes out there and three of the guys feel like they've got to carry all of the weight, it's hard on them. It's a lot of pressure on them.

"But everybody contributed, everybody shot a score that counted. That's real important in team golf."

First-round leader Davis Parker's 2-under-par 70 led PC's final-round charge, but his two-day total of 71-72-70--213 was only good for second individually, as well.

That's because VCU's Adam Ball shot a course-record 66 on Tuesday to seize the individual medalist honors. The sophomore from Richmond, Va., who was playing the course for the first time, broke the mark of the 2013 individual champion, Troy Valentine of South Florida, by two strokes.

"Everything (was working)," Ball said. "I hit the ball really well and I made a few putts early to start everything off and I never looked back. I was confident. I hit the ball really well (Monday). I made 10 birdies. ... I just made too many mistakes. But today, I kept the mistakes to a minimum."

Ball, who made six birdies and no bogeys Tuesday, enjoyed the Wexford layout. And the weather.

"This is my kind of golf course -- short and tight and tough greens," Ball said. "It suited my eye really well and it showed. I love it down here. It's nice to get out of the snow for a little while."

Notes: USC Aiken previously won the tournament in 2006 and 2009. ... VCU's Steffen Harm, a sophomore from Gerlingen, Germany, had a hole-in-one on the 180-yard third hole. ... Dayton freshman Kevin Wargo, a Hilton Head Island resident, finished 88th after shooting 90-83-86--259 as an individual.
