A Bluffton man was charged with first-degree assault and battery Monday, accused of disfiguring another man with a punch, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Raleigh Vincent Ward Jr., 33, was at his Quail Run Lane home at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday when, without provocation, he reportedly "sucker punched" a male guest in the face, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said. The victim was initially treated at Coastal Carolina Hospital, then transferred to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, McIntosh said.

The victim had injuries around his left eye that will require surgery and likely cause permanent disfigurement, according to McIntosh.

In 2001, Ward was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, but county prosecutors did not pursue the case, according to court records.

He is being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center, with bail set at $40,000, according to the jail log.
