A significant change in the weather made Monday seem like two different days for the teams playing in the ninth annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate golf tournament at Wexford Golf Club.

But one constant was the play of USC Aiken. The Pacers shot rounds of 296 and 297 for a two-round total of 593 and a six-stroke lead over second-place Charleston Southern.

While the Francis Marion-hosted event was graced most of the morning and early afternoon with bright sunlight and milder temperatures, the afternoon round saw the temperatures drop and the wind pick up substantially.

"We played pretty well in the morning," said Don Hill, head coach of first-round leader Elon. "But it was just a kind of battle of the elements this afternoon."

The Phoenix's first-round score of 294 gave them a three-stroke lead on the Pacers as play moved to the second 18 holes. But Elon couldn't keep up the pace, carding a 307 in the second round and falling to a tie for third with Presbyterian College.

The Pacers, meanwhile, shot a stroke better in the afternoon to move into first place.

"It was nothing spectacular. Everybody contributed, and that's what we always stress, everybody staying within their game," USC Aiken coach Michael Carlisle said. "We didn't have anybody who was a liability, anybody who shot really high that we had to make up for. It was just a consistent performance under some pretty tough conditions.

"The scores aren't going to impress anybody who reads them, but they don't know how difficult this golf course is with the wind and the cold."

Carlisle said the difference in the conditions was significant from the first round to the second.

"I think the golf course played four or five shots harder," he said.

Carlisle's Pacers were led by Brandon Robinson-Thompson and Kyle Godsman, who tied for second with two-round scores of 146, three shots behind individual leader Davis Parker (71-72--143) of Presbyterian.

Parker is the only golfer under par through two rounds. Tuesday's third and final round tees off at 8:30 a.m.
