Good people don't seek office because of media

info@islandpacket.comFebruary 17, 2014

Recently, the executive editor of the Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette wrote a rather lengthy article about the personal travails of Hilton Head Island's current S.C. House member, Rep. Andy Patrick.

It was obvious from the article that it had little, if any input, from Patrick, even though the newspaper offered him opportunities for an interview. Rather, it appears that the article was based mostly on an affidavit filed by Mrs. Amee Patrick, who as we might expect, had somewhat biased opinions.

The end result of this article is that not only has Beaufort County lost a good House member, but a very viable candidate for S.C. Superintendent of Education.

No wonder we have such difficulty finding good, honest and decent people of any political persuasion to run for town council, the school board, county council or any other political office. Who among us would put ourselves into this sort of position?

Roads with potholes need state's attention

Living in the Lowcountry, it is with great sadness that I witness how we are not taking care of our roads filled with potholes.

One of the major corridors off of Interstate-95 onto Hilton Head Island and to Beaufort is filled with tire-damaging potholes. You will have a hard time finding a non-damaged access road into these areas that attract tourists.

Hello, legislature. We must address these issues if you want to continue getting revenue from tourists. Open your eyes and you will see what I mean. Get off your cell and take a look around.
