Beaufort's Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park playground has been closed for repair due to safety concerns, according to a city news release.

Rubber mats designed to provide a soft landing for children falling or jumping from playground equipment are cracking and breaking, according to Isiah Smalls, Beaufort's director of public works and facilities management.

City parks crews are working to remove the "defective" rubberized matting, Smalls said. It will be replaced with special mulch.

Smalls said the warranty on the rubberized surface has expired.

"Weather permitting, our goal is to have the Waterfront Park Playground repaired and open for fun by this weekend," Smalls said. The new mulch will cost about $5,000, according to Smalls.

The city saved money by doing all of the demolition, removal and disposal itself, Smalls said.

The park is located along the Beaufort River near the Richard V. Woods Memorial Bridge.
