Jasper County wreck leaves one dead

February 15, 2014

A U.S. Navy petty officer was killed in a one-car crash just south of Ridgeland early Saturday morning, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Clarence "Michael" Tuttle, 21, was driving a 2003 Nissan sedan south on I-95 about 1:05 a.m. when the car drove onto the median, struck several trees and overturned near the 15-mile marker, Senior Trooper Hannah Wimberly said Saturday.

Tuttle was pronounced dead at the scene, Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls said Saturday. Tuttle was on his way to meet his wife in Savannah at the time of the wreck, Sauls said.

Wimberly said it was unclear why the car left the roadway. The investigation has been closed.
