Hilton Head Island Mayor Drew Laughlin recognized four residents Monday at his quarterly Citizens of the Month Dinner.

The islanders honored are:

  • Louise Cohen, whose family traces its island roots to the 1800s. Cohen is director and founder of the Hilton Head Gullah Museum.
  • Patti Maurer, an arts educator who serves as chairwoman of the board of directors of the Island School Council for the Arts. Maurer also started the dance department at Hilton Head Island Elementary School for the Creative Arts and volunteers with the Main Street Youth Theatre.
  • Heather Rath, chairwoman of the town's Parks and Recreation Commission. Rath has served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations and helped organize a weeklong event held last fall celebrating the legacy of Hilton Head Island.
  • Tom Berger, whose volunteer work with Service Corps of Retired Executives has helped small-business owners launch their business plans.
