Town should ink new franchise deal

info@islandpacket.comFebruary 14, 2014

I paid Republic about $55 per quarter to pick up my garbage in 2013. Now I hear that it's going to cost around $158. That's about $400 more a year that is pretty much being wasted. It's also about 40 percent more than I paid them in 2011.

I don't know a lot about garbage, but what I do know is that it is very inefficient to have a lot of garbage trucks picking up garbage here and there. It's just a lot better to have fewer trucks going bang, bang, bang down the street, hitting every house. It's good for Republic. It's good for us. It's good for the island.

I think maybe the fly in the ointment is the problem of dealing with the condos and the like. They evidently need special treatment and/or they don't want to pay for what this special treatment costs. Because of this, I think the town is going to waste my $400.

Here's what I think. Let's strike another deal with Republic (or whoever) that just covers single-family homes. Let's also explore a separate deal to cover multi-unit places. If this latter deal cannot be worked out, these places will have to fend for themselves.

Let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.
