A Ridgeland woman was killed in a one-vehicle accident in Hampton County early Thursday after the car she was in struck a downed tree, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The Honda Civic was traveling south on Speed Limit Road in Varnville at about 2 a.m. when it struck a tree in the road, Lance Cpl. Judd Jones said. An investigation was ongoing Thursday and no charges were pending, Jones said.

One passenger, 24-year-old Tiffani Johnson, was pronounced dead at the scene, Hampton County Coroner Ernie Washington Sr. said.

The driver, 23-year-old James Dara of Ridgeland, was taken to Hampton Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, Jones said. A second passenger, 22-year-old Tahnee Goode of Scotia, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

Their conditions were unavailable from the hospital Thursday afternoon.
