Beaufort County Council will sink its teeth into the county's most pressing issues and strategic planning initiatives at its annual retreat this week.

The three-day workshop is designed to bring the council together for a brief look at the past year and to talk about the county's broad plans, County Council Chairman Paul Sommerville has said.

The workshop begins at 1 p.m. Thursday in the large meeting room of the Bluffton library at 120 Palmetto Way. It will continue all day Friday and Saturday morning. Both of those meetings begin at 8:30 a.m. and also take place in the Bluffton library. All of the meetings are open to the public.

The retreat will be facilitated by Lyle Sumek Associates, a Florida-based consulting firm that specializes in strategic planning for local governments, according to its website.

Sommerville and county administrator Gary Kubic will begin the retreat Thursday afternoon with a discussion of the county and the council's performance over the past year and an overview of the key elements to the county's strategic planning and five-year plan.

On Friday, topics include a possible referendum, economic development strategies, a solid waste plan and the budget, then the council will jump into its objectives for the next five years and lay out an action plan for 2014.

On Saturday morning, council will review its governmental process and wrap up the retreat.
