  • In other business, council:

    • scheduled the annual town of Port Royal retreat for 8:30 a.m. March 8. Issues, projects and finances for the year will be discussed.
    • postponed appointing a fifth member to the Design Review Board.
    • agreed to update the Port Royal Skate Park policy to allow bicyclists to use the ramps and other amenities. Signs are being ordered, town manager Van Willis said.

Port Royal Town Council is considering setting fees for wrecker service and vehicle storage in an attempt to keep the charges fair.

The second and final council vote was postponed Wednesday after several tow truck drivers came to the meeting to ask that a section be added to the proposed ordinance allowing additional fees for unusual circumstances, such as towing a vehicle out of the water.

Council's intent is to make fees and services "fair and equitable" for residents and visitors to the town, according to the proposal.

It includes a schedule of fees for tows and storage when a vehicle is towed by a wrecker company that appears on a rotation list the town uses. The maximum fees do not apply when a vehicle owner makes other arrangements for service.

Fees range from $65 for winching, to $200 for a regular tow to $500 if a heavy-duty wrecker is needed. Storage fees would not begin until after 24 hours had passed and would be $40 per day.

The ordinance is being considered after residents received high bills for tows and the town faced a hefty charge after a Port Royal vehicle wrecked in a rural area, officials said in January when the ordinance was voted on the first time.
