Extended hours coming to 3 Beaufort County libraries in March

The Beaufort County library system will extend hours at three of its branches starting March 3, according to county officials.

Branches in Beaufort and Bluffton, and on Hilton Head Island will be open 50 hours a week, up from the current 40 hours, deputy county administrator Bryan Hill said Monday .

The change will open the libraries for more hours during the week, including evening hours, according to a county news release Tuesday.

The three branches will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, according to the release. The branches will remain closed Sunday.

All five Beaufort County libraries are currently open 40 hours a week, and the three branches with extended hours are the most visited, library system director Wlodeck Zaryczny has said. The St. Helena Island and Lobeco branches will remain at 40 hours.

The system is hiring additional staff for the extra hours, Hill said. On Monday, he said he had approved promotions for six current library employees and the addition of two new ones.

Under Zaryczny's plan for extended hours, more than a dozen additional staff members are needed in all, Hill said. Efforts to reach Zaryczny for comment Tuesday were unsuccessful.
