A man who died after his car wrecked Monday on Hilton Head Island likely suffered a medical emergency, Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen said.

Richard Farrahar, 69, of Bourne, Mass., had just entered Sea Pines on Greenwood Drive about 7:30 a.m. when he veered off the right side of the road and struck a tree, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

He was unresponsive following the crash, the report said. His wife and passenger, 66-year-old Kathleen Farrahar, told deputies her husband suffered from a heart condition.

The couple were brought to Hilton Head Hospital, where Richard Farrahar was pronounced dead of natural causes, Allen said.

His wife's condition was not immediately available Tuesday afternoon.
