A man escaped from his vehicle unharmed Friday night after it caught fire in a Beaufort neighborhood.

The fire occurred about 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Prince and Pilot streets, according to Beaufort/Port Royal Fire Department Capt. John Robinson.

The driver was the sole occupant of the car and managed to get out without injury, Robinson said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known and was under investigation Friday night, he said.

A resident who lives across the street from the fire scene said she heard a loud boom and ran outside to find the car in flames.

The car sustained heavy damage to its front end and top.
