A Beaufort man accused of trying to steal a four-wheeler at gunpoint during a test drive last month was charged with armed robbery, according to Beaufort County Detention Center records.

Byron Habersham, 19, was charged with armed robbery with a deadly weapon, first-degree assault and battery, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, according to the jail log.

Habersham attempted to rob a Burton man trying to sell his ATV while the man was on a test drive Jan. 21, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.

At about 4:30 p.m. in woods between Churchdale Road and Burton Wells Park, Habersham pointed a silver revolver at the victim and a man test driving the ATV, the release said. After the victim refused to get off the ATV, Habersham struck him on the head with the gun. The victim wrestled Habersham to the ground, but the man test-driving the four-wheeler drove away, the release said. The test driver has not been identified.

Habersham was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for treatment after the incident. He was then sent to the Beaufort County Detention Center on Monday, where he is being held for prosecution without bond, according to the jail log.
