Beaufort resident Alan Poe believes relationships can improve through better communication.

The relationship coach wants to help, whether you're married, dating or a caregiver.

"I want to help people find better ways to relate to each other so that life is better, so there's more quality to the relationship and they can enjoy each other more," Poe said. "That's what we should have more of -- more closeness, more intimacy."

Poe will hold "The Foundation for Healthy Relationships: Marriage, Dating and Caregiving," an interactive lecture and discussion at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at Helena House Assisted Living in Port Royal.

Poe has been a relationship coach in hospitals, churches and private practice for 35 years. He has also been a hospice chaplain for eight years.

"We'll look at all different types of relationships," Poe said. "Although they're different, there's a basic foundation to all relationships. We'll be dealing with the relationship with yourself and how that affects all things."

The session is targeted towards anyone who is struggling with a relationship that they'd like to see move in a different direction. Poe encourages couples to come, as well as individuals.

"I hope to help them learn skills in communication," Poe said. "Some are very basic: tone of voice, listening. Yet people don't apply them very often, especially when there's conflict."
