Town Council thrills with its pure genius

How else can one describe the accomplishment of Hilton Head Island Mayor Drew Laughlin and his retinue of Town Council members who have succeeded in terminating the best garbage collection service we have had in almost 20 years and, at the same time, have enabled us to pay 375 percent of the former rate (from $208.52 to $780.56 per year) to replicate our current service. That's Republic Services' quote to retain our same service.

Now, by any measure, that's a noteworthy achievement for the taxpayers. Good going guys; you've scored again.

Unfortunately, these wizards don't understand that to solve the problem with unique weekend collection requirements for rental and timeshare units, you must understand and approach the question with targeted solutions, not a broad brush approach, ensnaring the majority of homeowners in an expensive boondoggle. Create solutions, not bigger problems.

In a recent town meeting, these same scholars lavishly praised the virtues of the University of South Carolina Beaufort relocating its Resort Hospitality Program to the island because it would "elevate the intellectual climate of the community." I guess, to someone of their proven capabilities, learning how to manage a kitchen, cook, wait tables or handle a front desk might enhance their level of sophistication. However, for the rest of us, having successfully completed the eighth grade, it's hardly likely that it would prove to be unusually enlightening.

Folks, understand what they have accomplished for you.

Which extra-galactic black hole are these guys from? Find it, and send them back.
