Rep. Mark Sanford returns more than 25 percent of budget

U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford returned more than 25 percent of his annual office budget to the federal government, according to a news release.

The Republican, whose district includes most of Beaufort County, gave back about $231,000 of his nearly $802,000 authorized federal budget, which is given to each member of Congress.

"Too often in government there is a distance between what a bureaucrat might spend money on and what a taxpayer would," he said. "Our office approaches this fundamental question from the side of the taxpayer, and I believe our end-of-year surplus reflects that."
