A Burton man was assaulted Thursday after he saw another man shoplifting and tried to intervene, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

The victim was walking through Food Lion in Burton about 7:20 p.m. when he noticed a black male place a can of food and several steaks under his shirt, the report said. When the shopper asked him to remove the items and leave, the suspect became violent.

He reportedly struck the victim several times -- cutting his cheek -- and pushed him into a shelf, the report said. The suspect then ran out of the store, leaving the food behind.

EMS treated the victim at the scene.

The Sheriff's Office is searching for the suspect, identified by a witness as a 28-year-old Beaufort County man.
