Carrabba to represent Hilton Head Prep at state bowling tournament

Hilton Head Prep's boys bowling team -- left to right, John Sheehan, Greg Warren, James Leonard, Angelo Carrabba, Brayden Mitchell and coach Bryan VanGronigen -- shows off its hardware after winning the SCISAA boys state bowling championship. Carrabba will be bowling in the individual state championship this week.

A week after his late-frame heroics helped lead Hilton Head Prep to a 495-455 win over Heathwood Hall in Columbia in the SCISAA boys state bowling championship, Angelo Carrabba will represent the Dolphins in the SCISAA state individual championships at 3 p.m. Thursday at Royal Z Lanes in North Columbia.

Though there is tough competition from Cardinal Newman and Wilson Hall, Prep coach Bryan VanGronigen feels like Carrabba is poised to be competitive among the field if his shot is the same as when he bowled well on the same lane conditions last week.

"If he picks his spares and strings together a few strikes, his chances of winning the entire thing are pretty good," VanGronigen said.

It's ironic that Carrabba is the bowler to represent Hilton Head Prep. According to VanGronigen, he learned to bowl just three months ago.

"His progress has been truly phenomenal," VanGronigen said. "He is extremely coachable, which has contributed much to his success."
