An attempted handgun sale turned into a robbery Sunday in Bluffton, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.

A 20-year-old man and his 25-year-old girlfriend told deputies they were robbed at gunpoint at about 6:30 p.m. while trying to sell a handgun he had previously purchased for his girlfriend.

The man said he had arranged to meet a friend interested in purchasing the gun near Bufflehead Lane in Bluffton, but the transaction went awry when the friend took the gun from his lap, according to the release.

A second, unidentified man brandished a gun of his own and told the victims to leave. The suspects then ran into a nearby wooded area, leaving the couple unharmed.

The stolen handgun was described as a SCCY Industries 9mm.
