Hilton Head should stick with burning ban

info@islandpacket.comJanuary 26, 2014

I am appalled that the Hilton Head Island Town Council is going to revisit its ban on open burning to accommodate a few. I respectfully request that they also revisit any and all verbiage they use relating to the health of its citizens in all its communications. In the town's mission statement, one of its objectives is "to promote policies and programs which will assure the long term health and vitality of the community." In its Sustainable Practices Action Plan, the town states that one of its goals is to "provide a serene, safe and healthy living environment for residents, guests and visitors."

Open burning has been proven to be a risk to health. Open burning poses safety risks. Allow open burning and protect the health and safety of its citizens?! We certainly do not want the town to send mixed messages.
