A small brush fire in woods behind Bluffton Elementary School forced some students and teachers to evacuate to the opposite side of the building Friday afternoon.

The Bluffton Township Fire District extinguished the fire after about an hour, and the students returned to their classrooms, Beaufort County School District spokesman Jim Foster said.

The fire district responded to the fire around 1:15 p.m. About 100 fifth-graders and special education students in the areas of the building closest to the fire evacuated to the other side of the school, Foster said.

Three trucks were on scene and had the fire under control by around 2:15 p.m., fire Capt. Randy Hunter said in a text message.
