An incident of road rage Monday began with a lewd gesture and ended with one man striking another with a baton, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

A 19-year-old Hardeeville man told deputies he was driving a white Chevrolet pickup truck on Spanish Wells Road at about 4:40 p.m. when a Red Toyota Prius cut him off and forced him into the grassy median. The Prius driver allegedly made an obscene gesture as he continued down the road, the report said.

The 19-year-old said he followed the Prius while trying to contact the Sheriff's Office. After both men pulled over, the Prius driver ran toward the 19-year-old waving a wooden baton. The truck driver left and parked again near Timbercrest Circle where the Prius pulled up and both drivers got out. The Prius driver then struck the teen in the rib cage with the baton, the report said. The teen later refused treatment.

The suspect, a 57-year-old Hilton Head Island man, was later arrested and charged with second-degree assault and battery. He was released Tuesday from the Beaufort County Detention Center after posting a $10,000 bond.
