Stop the addiction to other people's money

Some of the recent writers have revealed their addiction to Opium -- Other People's Money. It's easy to say, "Raise the minimum wage" if you're not running a business. It's easy to say the Town of Hilton Head Island should fund art groups with taxpayers' money. Why not build a rowing and sailing site if it can be funded through O.P.M. Oh, and pay all teachers more, because they deserve it.

Good grief. If you want to pay more than minimum wage, then own a business and pay your employees accordingly. If you want to support the arts, then be a patron and spend your own money. If you want a rowing dock, then get those with the same interest together and have them put their money where their mouth is.

Higher pay for teachers? Perhaps funding could come from reducing administrative expense, especially in those school districts that are rated the lowest in the state. Or maybe give raises to individual administrators and teachers who reach education goals instead of giving everyone a raise.

Simply throwing more money at pet projects and issues will not solve funding challenges. Perhaps the writers can be generous with their own funds before reaching for another hit of O.P.M.
